If you have bought a printer and it is less than a year old, it is under warranty. I recently was onsite at a client’s house and her printer was on the floor in a useless state of disarray. She indicated that it had a paper jam, yet there was no visible paper causing the error. After a quick look at it, I contacted Canon directly, spoke briefly with them and they are now sending her a replacement. I have also dealt with HP printers and they have a local service center that will fix it for free.
